We are closely monitoring Hurricane Helene as it is predicted to hit our service area late Thursday and early Friday morning as it moves up from the Florida panhandle. This is a potentially catastrophic storm. Damaging winds and heavy rains are expected to reach us late Thursday night and early Friday morning. With the predicted 4 to 6 inches of rain from the hurricane, on top of the rain from Wednesday, the ground will be saturated, causing tree roots to give way with the wind gusts. We should see an increased number of trees, limbs and power lines fall during this time. There is a possibility for major and extended outages as poles break during these situations.
Linemen and staff are ready to jump into action when outages occur. Additional contract crews have been scheduled to assist us with anticipated restoration needs. During widespread outages, we repair facilities that will return service to the largest number of members, and will continue to do so until everyone is back online.
As Helene approaches, now is the time to review or make an emergency plan for you and your family. If someone in your family needs medical equipment, make plans to have an alternative power supply in your home or relocate to another location to stay.
Safety concerns
-
In the event that you see a downed line, assume that it is live and extremely dangerous. Do not approach it and report it to us (not on social media).
-
If a generator is used, make sure it is placed outside in a well-ventilated location to protect your family from carbon monoxide poisoning.
-
When installing a new generator, have a licensed electrician perform the installation. If improperly installed, backfeeding can occur, causing a potentially fatal injury to our linemen.
