BUCKHEAD, Ga. – Authorities have issued numerous warnings about a scam, yet a Buckhead business was taken for nearly $1,000.

It was not a typical robbery, but theft by another method.

On Tuesday, a call came in to a Buckhead restaurant from a man who claimed to be from Georgia Power. A staffer was told immediate payment had to be made on an overdue balance or else.

The caller went on to say there would be no time to try to go to a power company office and make a payment because the doors would be closing a 5:00 p.m.

The staffer fell for what authorities label the green dot scam. He rushed to a store, bought a prepaid credit card and put the exact amount on that card demanded by the phony caller.

That restaurant unknowingly handed over $988. Georgia Power is cautioning everyone they don’t make payment demand calls.
